Interview One [Clarke Mackey]

Our first interview was conducted at Clarke Mackey's personal office at the Isabel Bader Center for the Performing Arts located in Kingston, Ontario. The interview subject was comfortable with having his identity revealed and his interview audio recorded. As a result, his interview was conducted [mainly] by C. Madensky while L. Broadhurst took notes; both asked follow-up questions that were originally unscripted. L. Broadhurst's personal audio recorder was used. The interview subject is a long-term professor of the Film and Media Department at the University, so his questions were tailored to explore the nature of this relationship with reference to the original research question.

 

Interview Two [Graduate]

Our second interview was conducted via email between L. Broadhurst and the interview subject. The interview subject was not comfortable conducting the interview in person or having their identity revealed due to their current relationship with the Film and Media Department at Queen's University. As a result, they were emailed their list of questions by L. Broadhurst, who set up the interview in the first place. The interview subject is a recent graduate of Film Studies at the University, so their questions were tailored to explore the nature of this relationship with reference to the original research question. 

 

Interview Three [Stephanie Wilson]

Our third interview was conducted in the Film and Media Office located at the Isabel Bader Center for the Performing Arts in Kingston, Ontario. The interview subject was not comfortable with having the interview recorded due to the need to maintain her integrity as an employee of the Film and Media Department at Queen's University. As a result, her interview was conducted [mainly] by C. Madensky while L. Broadhurst took notes; both asked follow-up questions that were originally unscripted. The interview subject is both a graduate and employee of the Film and Media Department at the University, so her questions were tailored to explore the nature of this relationship with reference to the original research question.

METHODOLOGY

 

Taking from Victor Turner’s method of research, we decided to interview people from the Queen’s community about their experiences with Homecoming. To further tie into Turner’s research from our readings, we also asked them about what symbols they identify Homecoming with. Using the interview method, we hoped to achieve a deeper understanding of what Homecoming meant to the Queen’s Film & Media community.  We conducted 3 separate interviews. All of the interviews had overlapping questions, but no two were exactly alike. We chose to ask personal questions tailored to the experience of each interviewee in order to best understand their take on Queen’s University Homecoming as alumni. We first conducted an audio-recorded interview with Clarke Mackey. We then conducted a non-recorded interview with Stephanie Wilson. This interviewee did not feel comfortable with her answers being recorded, so we took notes instead. Our final interviewee, who we will refer to as ‘Graduate’ completed a digital interview in which he was emailed the questions and responded. This individual did not feel comfortable revealing their identity due to their relationship with the Film and Media Department at Queen’s. We chose to do interviews as we felt it would be necessary to our research to get personal stories of those who have interacted with Homecoming. These personal stories from varying sources, such as alumni, became our research material. It was important to interview across the years at Queen’s, as well as those who have had varying experiences, to get a wealth of stories and data.
