RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

As two young adults living in a large university town, we are constantly bombarded with cultural events that take place around us. In being asked to research a single event, we concluded that there was one to which we both feel comfortable commenting on even though our participation in the event itself varied. After choosing Queen’s University Homecoming, we realized the event itself was too broad to comment on as a whole due to overwhelming participation by current students and alumni alike. In order to condense our potential research, we thought about how Homecoming could be broken down into smaller parts, eventually deciding to look at one faculty and their overall participation. As Stage and Screen Studies students who are both active in the drama department, we thought it would be interesting to shift our focus to the Film and Media Department. More specifically, we wanted to understand what it means to be a student (or alumni) of the Film and Media department at Queen’s University during Homecoming, and whether or not a certain identity could be shaped or formed around the event itself. From that point forward, we decided to conduct multiple interviews with a wide range of participants to best understand the impact of this event. We also thought it would be interesting to look at the symbology behind Queen’s jackets and their impact on the identifying event. Using our own bias and personal experience as current students, we felt it would be best to look outwards to graduates and employees of the Film and Media department.
