Victor Turner

Victor Turner says, “symbols are essentially involved in social process.” (Turner, pg.1) During our interviews, we asked what symbols our interviewees identified Homecoming with. Analyzing these cultural symbols of Homecoming is vital to our research, as it allows us to analyze what the ritual of Homecoming represents to our interviewees.

Diana Taylor

How do we find identity in a place that doesn't have a space for us?

In the words of Diana Taylor, "we learn and transmit knowledge through embodied action, through cultural agency, and by making choices" (Taylor, XVI).

Ultimately, we determined that, with reference to our interview subjects and personal bias, there is not a designated space for the identity of a Film and Media Student to be strongly represented during Queen's University Homecoming. Student's and alumni of this particular department are expected to identify themselves only as a Queen's University or ArtSci student, not giving agency to their actual degree plan. Perpetually trapped between the feeling of belonging and not, students and alumni of the department can connect to Diana Taylor's feelings of being an outsider in a location that is meant to be home.
